All workshops will be held at Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre (MMNC) on Tuesdays from 10:30-11:30am (except the Medieval Show which runs from 9:30-11:30). MMNC is a nut free venue.  All families are welcome to meet for lunch afterwards, regardless of whether you attend the workshops. Living Learning activities are Home Education Association Inc. 3/5/16 The design process…. and Magic

Many artists engage in a process of planning and experimenting before creating a masterpiece. Come along and have a lively discussion with other enthusiastic, young home schooled artists and create an artwork for the Winter Magic Art Street art exhibition. We will explore the works of other, famous artists and discuss the art making processes they undertake.

Rachel has led us on many art adventures, some collaborative, some 3-D and lots of them full of layers and colour. She is very keen to facilitate the creation of an artwork that represents the Blue Mountains Home Education Network to show our wider community how magical we are.

Rachel has been officially homeschooling for more years than she can remember. Prior to homeschooling, she gained a BA in Fine Arts and a Diploma of Education. She has taught Visual Arts in a few high schools and has been facilitating art workshops in a variety of spaces over the past few years.

Screen Shot 2016-04-04 at 3.15.55 PM

In very simple terms, a map is a picture of the world as seen from above. There is more

to it, of course, and in these two hands-on workshops we will explore in detail how the

world can be mapped and how maps can be used.

The workshops will look at concepts such as scale, map symbols and projections. We

will draw our own map of the MMNC and, if time permits, will build a 3D topographic

map. This will be followed by an introduction to using maps in the context of

navigation/orientation and games to practice our newly learnt skills.

Participants are required to bring along a compass for the second workshop. Parents are required to supervise their children for any of the outdoors/outside the MMNC activities.

Jane Brennan has always been fascinated by the way humans perceive and reason about the physical space that surrounds them; and loves to share her passion about maps and mapping.

Jane is home educating her 11-year old son and has been a lecturer in Geographic Information Systems at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) since 2008. Prior to this, she lectured in Information Systems and Computer Science both at UTS and at the University of New South Wales, where she also did her PhD in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Spatial Reasoning.
